THE HIGHWAY WATCH PROGRAM

What is the Highway Watch® Program?

Highway Watch® is a national roadway safety and security program that utilizes the skills, experiences and road smarts of America’s safe, professional truck drivers to help protect American’s roadways.  Highway Watch® is administered nationally by the American Trucking Associations (ATA) and funded by the Department of Homeland Security (“DPH”).

Truck drivers report to America’s highways for work each day.  They are familiar with the terrain, and armed with the latest location and communication technology.  As a result, truck drivers are the best eyes and ears on the road.  Highway Watch® was established to enable 1,000,000 professional drivers across the nation to:

1.       Prevent commercial vehicles or cargo from being used as weapons against Americans

2.       Protect the Nation’s critical infrastructure of bridges, tunnels, and other potential terrorist targets

3.       Provide critical security data from the highway environment for information sharing and analysis

4.       Promote important safe driving skills and habits

5.       Improve coordination with Federal, State and Local emergency management, public safety, and law enforcement officials.

Highway Watch is an eye-opening reality check of what the terrorists are planning. There are actual video rehearsals that terrorists have made as well as real life scenarios of actual situations where terrorists have already been caught in the United States. Our drivers are on the road 24/7/365; the trucking industry is a perfect fit to keep our nation safe. It is also a great opportunity to promote a positive image for the trucking industry and our drivers.

How Can I Get Trained To Be A Highway Watch® Driver?

MMTA needs to train 5,000 drivers this year in Massachusetts.  MMTA is also responsible to train 1,000 drivers in New Hampshire, so if you are a resident of NH, be sure to call the MMTA.  Remember, the training materials and the training sessions are FREE OF CHARGE as Highway Watch® is funded by the DHS.

There are two options for training individuals on the Highway Watch® Program:

Classroom Training
A trainer will be sent to the facility of your choice and administer a classroom training for as many drivers as you wish.

Self Taught Program
If you are interested in Highway Watch® but have no time in your schedule to attend a class, we have a solution for you.  There is a lending library available, which allows individuals to borrow any one of the following audio/visual types and watch the training program on their own:  DVD; VHS; Audio CD; or Cassette.  The self taught package includes an enrollment form, which must be sent back to the MMTA to notify the Association you have completed the training.

After attending a Highway Watch® session or completing the self taught program, the driver will receive a certificate of completion and ID card for the training course and will be provided with the appropriate telephone numbers for reporting incidents.

To become a part of the Highway Watch® team, please call the MMTA office at 888-401-MMTA or 617-695-3512.
